Buying a car, of course, is a joyful and long-awaited moment, but besides the purchase itself, you have to walk around with the documents before you can get behind the wheel and feel like the owner of the vehicle. This issue needs to be approached carefully and seriously, since this is an additional cost in time and money.

Buying a new car in the showroom

When buying a car in a car dealership, first you have to inspect it for damage and then proceed with the paperwork inside the car dealership. In the salon you should be given:

  1. A service book for the purchased car, it must contain a note that the car was inspected by the specialists of this car dealership before the sale, the complete completeness and serviceability of all components and systems must be checked.
  2. Instructions for the care and operation of the machine.
  3. Vehicle passport.
  4. Sales receipt, which must contain the stamp of the car dealership and the signature of who sold the car.
  5. Purchase and sale agreement with an insurance policy.


In addition, you should be informed that you have 5 working days for registering a vehicle in relation to the legislation of Russia. If these deadlines are violated, an administrative fine will be imposed. After issuing the list of documents, we go to the traffic police.

Car registration in the traffic police

There are two ways to register vehicle documents, the first is independently, the second - with the help of specialists or special institutions. The second method, of course, will save you time, but you will have to pay extra for such a pleasure. The first one is proportionally opposite, it will save money, but waste time.To register a car, you will need:

  1. Passport;
  2. A photocopy of your passport;
  3. Technical passport for the car;
  4. Sale and purchase agreement for the car;
  5. Receipt of payment of the duty;
  6. Civil liability auto insurance (OSAGO), which should have been obtained at a car dealership;
  7. Application for registration of the car.

Also, do not forget that the car must have: a jack, a first aid kit, an emergency stop sign, a fire extinguisher and essential keys (for changing wheels).


If you chose to register the car through the company, then they will need to provide:

  1. Automobile;
  2. Your passport;
  3. Passport for the car;
  4. Documents that prove your ownership of this vehicle;
  5. Power of attorney, preferably certified by a verified notary.


After that you will be told when to come and pick up all the documents and the car.

If you decide to go through the entire procedure yourself, then after collecting a list of documents, we immediately go to the traffic police:

  1. Submit all the necessary documents to the reception window.
  2. You pay the receipts that will be given to you, what to pay for, where and in what amounts - they will tell you all on the spot, then give the receipts of payment.
  3. Further, an examination is carried out, inspection of your car by the traffic police.
  4. The final stage, after passing all the examinations, you will be given a certificate of registration of the car and car license plates.


Depending on the day of the week and time of day, this procedure will drag on for several hours, it is unlikely that you will meet an hour.

Without an OSAGO insurance policy, the traffic police will not begin the procedure for checking and registering your car.

Buying a used car

Registration of a used car is almost no different from the registration of a newly purchased one, the seller removes the car from the register, and you, as the new owner, will be obliged to re-register the car.

Do not forget that during this procedure, a ban on registration should not be imposed on the car by the court. For example, if the previous owner has debts to the bank. Then it will be impossible to register such a car. Also, the body number must not be damaged as a result of corrosion, chemical or physical attack.

Registration of a car brought from abroad

You can often see cars brought from abroad, but it is not so easy to register them. To do this, you will need to pay extra for:

  1. Issuance of numbers;
  2. Production of a new technical passport;
  3. Theft check;
